From The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser of 12 June 1881: "EXTRAORDINARY DEATH OF A SCHOOLBOY. An inquest was held yesterday at the Worsley Hotel, Tatton-street, Salford, before Mr. F. Price, County Coroner, on the body of Elijah Crimes, 10 years of age, who lived with his parents at 55, Melbourne-street, Regent-road, Salford. The deceased was a pupil at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Day School in West Craven-street, Salford, and on Friday afternoon the children, as usual, were let out to play in the recreation ground attached to the school. It was stated by a monitor named John Fleming that on the signal being given for the scholars to return to school the deceased and another boy named Dawson were running in opposite directions across the yard, when they came into collision. They bumped their heads violently against each other, and both fell to the ground. The boy Dawson did not appear to be much the worse, but the deceased became very sick, and was sent home, accompanied by an elder boy. He afterwards became unconscious, and was attended by Dr. Gascoyne Wright, who stated that his brain was injured. The lad died without recovering consciousness on Saturday morning. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, being of the opinion that deceased probably died from concussion of the brain."
