From The Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 28 October 1918: "HONOURS FOR ROTHERHAM OFFICER Two high distinctions have been awarded to Lieut. Charles Chrimes, R.A.F., a member of the well-known Chrimes family of Rotherham, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Chrimes, of 9, Wilbury Villas, Hove. He has won the Italian 'La Croce al Merito Guerra' and another honour which can only be referred to at present as a special campaign medal. Lieut. Chrimes is now stationed at Malta and the importance and hazard of the expedition in which he took part may be judged from the fact that when they returned he and his second pilot were feted at the expense of the Italian Government, and also by the Admiral and the Air Force Commander of Malta. When the medals were presented all the highest naval officers and all the aviators and troops available were present, and reference was made to the way in which these British aviators had achieved their task in the face of the most determined opposition on the part of the enemy. Afterwards there was a march past of 5,000 troops, at which Lieut. Chrimes took the salute."
Charles' Military Service Record is available to download from The National Archives TNA Reference: AIR 76/86/64
Service Number: Unknown.
From The Sussex Agricultural Express of 15 January 1932: "OVERTURNED CAR - Charles Chrimes, of Hove, pleaded not guilty to driving a motor car without reasonable care at Five Ash Down on December 25th. ... Richard Chrimes, of Hove, father of defendant, said in his opinion there was plenty of room and plenty of time. They were clear of one car before the other passed them.... Defendant was fined £3 and was ordered to pay costs amounting to £4 17s. 6d., and the magistrates decided that defendant's license should not be endorsed."
In 1935 Charles obtained a divorce for 'Luigia Maria Chrimes'. There is no UK record of this marriage, so perhaps it took place overseas.
The 1939 Register declares Charles to be divorced, which is consistent with the 1935 divorce and preceeds the 1945 second marriage.
Charles's 1945 marriage was announced in the Yorkshire Post newspaper of 18 June 1945:
"Captain Charles Chrimes, of Hove, Sussex, and Miss Doris Laycock, younger daughter of the late Mr. Peter Laycock and Mrs. I Laycock, of Richmond, Yorks., were married at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Harehills Avenue, Leeds, on. Saturday. Both the bride and bridegroom are attached to the Aeronautical Inspection Staff of the Ministry of Aircraft Production. The Rev. A E. Howard officiated."
Despite the apparent age at marriage, the marriage record is compelling because of the place of birth.
I cannot find a death record for Charles, but the Administration record shows that he was living on and presumably died on Guernsey.
Charles's Grant of Administration reads: "CHRIMES Charles of Doyle Ct Doyle Rd Saint Peter Port Guernsey Channel Islands died 20 December 1975 Administration with Will Brighton 18 March [1976] £4007 in England and Wales"
