William was illegitimate, taking his mother's surname William was an infamous character, known as "Bucket Crimes". William's birth was registered in the name CRIMES. From The Cheshire Observer of 25 May 1878: "CHESHIRE QUARTER SESSIONS - TRIALS OF PRISONERS William Crimes, 26 years, labourer, was sentenced to three months' hard labour for stealing fowls, the property of Thomas Morrey, at Bexton, on the 15th May." I cannot find William on the 1891 or 1901 UK Census William was mentioned in a court case covered by The Northwich Guardian on 4 October 1890: "...William Chrimes, Higher Town, Knutsford, a drayman in the employ of the Cheshire Lines Committee, deposed to buying three pigs from Mr. Barlow for £12 7s. 6d., on April 20th, 1886..." The reason for William's imprisonment in 1911 is not known. |
