From The Lincolnshire Chronicle of 29 September 1876: "...was fined £50, for having as a brewer, used 10lb of sugar as a substitute for malt, not being licensed. A similar fine was imposed on S. Chrimes, at the Sedgeley Police court for a like offence."
From The Dudley and District News of 7 July 1883: "SEDGLEY ... A PAINFUL CASE - Samuel Chrimes, landlord of the Bull's Head Inn, Lower Gornal, was charged with assaulting Fanny Daniels, wife of Chas. Daniels, safe manufacturer, of Lower Gornal.... The complainant stated that on Tuesday afternoon, the 26th ult., she went to the defendant's house for her husband, who had been drinking there all day. She saw some cards, and put them on the fire. When she asked him to go home with her, defendant commenced to use very bad language towards her, upon which she threw a jug at him, but it did not hit him. Defendant afterwards assaulted her very badly, gave her a black eye, and loosened some of her teeth. Her husband had been away from her for thirteen weeks, and during the greater part of that time had been living at the defendant's house.... Two witnesses were called to disprove that defendant committed the assault. - At this stage the Bench suggested that the case should be withdrawn, also a summons which had been taken out by the defendant against complainant for wilful damage and assault; This was agreed to."
