At the 1898 trial Edward was said to have the alias "Knowles" In the 1901 census Richard CHRIMES, Edward CHRIMES and Leonard CHRIMES were all "Convicts" in Carisbrooke, Hampshire having been found guilty of blackmail. This must be Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight. Edward was declared as Single. In the 1911 census Edward was age 43, single, living with his brother Richard and his family at Portslade near Shoreham, Sussex. In the 1921 England Census 'Edward Chrimes', single, was living with his brother Richard and Richard's wife. In 1921 Edward was 'Employer' based at 2 Norway St., Portslade and 40 Ship St., Brighton. From The London Gazette of 8 May 1931: "Notice is hereby given that by Deed Poll dated 25th April 1931, under the hand and seal of EDWARD BELGRAVE, of 9, Eaton-gardens, Hove, in the county of Sussex, Gentleman, such deed having been enrolled in the Central Office of the Supreme Court of Judicature, on 1st May 1931, the said Edward Belgrave renounced and abandoned the use of his name of Edward Chrimes, and in lieu thereof assumed and adopted the names of Edward Belgrave..." The complementary 1931 marriage record for Dora B TAYLOR gives spouse's name as Edward BELGRAVE, and the 1939 Register record for Edward BELGRAVE gives date of birth consistent with the Births Index for Edward CHRIMES and credible occupation. |
