Fanny's first husband John CRIMES died in 1914 in the First World War, leaving Fanny with two children to care for. From The Liverpool Daily Post of 27 November 1917: "MOTHER'S NEGLECT OF CHILDREN A sad case was heard at Chester, yesterday, when a young woman named Fanny Crimes, of 4, Davies' Court, Steammill-street, was sent to prison for two months, with hard labour, for neglecting her three children. The defendant was the wife of a soldier who was killed in the retreat from Mons. Since then she had had an illegitimate child, and for some time she had neglected her three children. Inspector Godfrey said on one occasion he found two of the children on a mat in front of the fire, which had no guard. The mother had gone out in the morning, leaving three coppers for the eldest girl to provide food during the day. The defendant was receiving a pension of 18s 6d and further sums of 4s 6d and 2s 4d." |
