In the 1921 England Census, Thomas completed and signed the household return for 12 John St., Crewe but thereafter his own entry was crossed through and the totals completed by the enumerator reflect his absence. In another 1921 England Census record Thomas, 'Married', was living in a large Boarding House in Lancashire. He was not with his wife Sarah Jane in Crewe.
