From Corinne Margaret SLADE by email: "The style of Fern Dene and The Hollies is replicated elswhere in Norley. I believe that there are houses (belonging to the Woodward family) which were also built by Thomas and, of course, Holly Bank, on Fingerpost Lane. I believe he build several houses in the Hoylake/West Kirby area but am not aware of actual numbers. The commemorative stone in the Chapel just has his initials; TC, clearly visible..." From The Northwich Guardian of 16 May 1903: "NORLEY UNITED METHODIST FREE CHURCH. FOUNDATION STONE LAYING. The work in connection with the erection of the new church and school at Norley for the members of the United Methodist Free Church was advanced a step farther on Wednesday, when a number of stones were laid by several of the leading members of the denomination......The contractor for the work is Mr. Thomas Chrimes, West Kirby, a former resident of Norley. For many years he was associated with the old church, and his generous action in superintending the construction of the new building free of charge and supplying the materials at cost price is much appreciated by the friends...." From The Crewe Chronicle of 10 February 1912: "Residents in the Norley district evinced a deep interest in the application of John Lundy for a full licence for the Tiger's Head Inn, Norley, which was heard at the Eddisbury Licencing Sessions on Monday.... John Chrimes, overseer for the parish of Norley, said the village would be better without the full licence. ... Thomas Chrimes, retired builder, said he had lived in Norley 67 years. He remembered when they had not only a 'tiger' but a 'lion' in the village - (laughter)- and it was a regular 'zoo'. (laughter) Mr. Woodhouse found it was so costly to keep the 'lion' that he slew him, and since then the morals of the place had gone up considerably ..." In completing the 1921 England Census return, Thomas gave ages in years but omitted to give the months. From The Cheshire Observer of 17 June 1933: "NORLEY - DEATH OF MR. THOMAS CHRIMES - The death of Mr. Thomas Chrimes, at the age of 88 years, occurred on Monday evening. Mr. Chrimes was a well known architect and master builder, and retired many years ago. He leaves two sons and two daughters." I cannot find a Probate/Administration record for Thomas. |
