Thomas is believed to be the first child of William CRIMES b.1756/7 and Elizabeth GEORGE, although the baptism record gives the mother's name as Mary. However, the baptism record is in the name GRIMES so may not relate to this Thomas. From The Chester Chronicle of 10 August 1810: "MARRIED Monday, at Shrewsbury, Mr. Thomas Crimes, of this city, to Miss Ann Stanton, of the former place." From The Chester Courant of 25 February 1817: "CHESTER RACES - We hear that Mr. Thomas Crimes, of the Coach and Horses Inn, is appointed Clerk of the Course..." From The Chester Chronicle of 24 October 1817: "DINNER at the Coach and Horses, Chester. The friends of Mr. Thomas Crimes adopt this mode of making known their intention to dine together at the above Inn, on Monday the third of November, to celebrate Mr. Crimes's entering upon the House--- They will be obliged by the attendance of such Gentlemen in town or country as may be disposed to favor them with their company on the occasion...." Thomas was the subject of a notice of bankruptcy published in The London Gazette on 23 March 1819, which refers to "Thomas Crimes, of the City of Chester, Coach-Proprietor, Innkeeper, Dealer and Chapman." Thomas was initiated into the Loyal British Lodge of Freemasons at Chester on 4 January 1820. Thomas had just one son, who died unmarried at the age of 22. Thomas again filed for bankruptcy in 1839, being described in The London Gazette of 5 March 1839 as "Thomas Crimes, late of Tower Wharf, Chester, Canal Agent". From The Liverpool Mercury of 10 October 1845: "DEATHS Oct. 3, in the 63rd year of his age, Mr. Thomas Crimes, Canal-street, Chester, formerly respected agent of the Ellesmere and Chester Canal Company." |
