There are no records for William in UK after 1845 (when he is presumed to have attended the baptism of his daughter Mary). However, his wife Mary Ann appears on the England Census of 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881, where she is described as 'Married' but is not with William.
William sailed alone from Liverpool to New York on The Republic in 1848.
At his 1852 marriage to Charlotte STONE at Boston, William declared that this was his second marriage (correct) but his marital status was not recorded and may not even have been asked.
William became a Naturalised US Citizen in 1867.
At his 1870 marriage to Eunice S BROWN at Boston, William declared that this was his second marriage (incorrect) and again, there was no record of marital status.
William's US records of marriage and naturalisation give his date and place of birth (1820, England) and his parents' names (Joseph and Mary).
It seems that William abandoned his English wife and children, this certainly being the eventual outcome, although he may have initially intended to settle in the US and then have his wife and children join him. Another possibility is that William sent money back to Mary Ann in England to help support her and the children. We have no way of knowing which of these is the correct scenario.
