Joseph's baptism record gives his parents' names as "/ , Hannah Crimes", implying that Joseph was born illegitimate. In the 1861 UK Census Joseph was living with Ann CRIMES b.1828, the unmarried daughter of Ellen Crimes nee WATKINSON who had married Joseph CRIMES before marrying Joseph GLOVER. Was Ann the same person as Hannah? In an 1874 Newspaper report of a trial at which Joseph was a witness, he was described as "Joseph Crimes, clerk to Messrs. Ferneyhough and Ashe, stock and share brokers, Cross-street" In the 1891 UK Census, Joseph was a patient in the Manchester Royal Infirmary. From The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser of 1 May 1891: "DEATHS On the 28th April, at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, Joseph Crimes, aged 36 years,. - Interment this day at Higher Peover Church." Joseph did not marry. Joseph appears on the Index to Death Duty Registers for 1891 as 'Crimes, Joseph of Chorlton-cum-Hardy died 28 Apr 91 Executor G ? Haywood.' Notices in The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser and The London Gazette in November 1892 sought claimants to Joseph's estate. |
