Fanny was the illegitimate daughter of Ann CRIMES. In the 1861 UK Census Fanny was living with her mother and her step(?)-father, she named Fanny Howarth age 10. From The Wolverhampton Express and Star of 8 December 1875: "IMMORALITY IN CHESHIRE Thomas Burgess, seventy-two years of age, holding a farm of about one hundred acres, at Mobberley, under Lord Egerton, was summoned at the Knutsford Petty Sessions yesterday to show cause why he should not contribute to the maintenance of the illegitimate child of Fanny Chrimes, a domestic servant formerly in his employ, of which he was the alleged father. Complainant, a rather good-looking woman, apparently about twenty-five years of age, stated that she was the mother of four illegitimate children, the father of the last one being the defendant. The defendant's house was kept by his son and daughter. On one occasion the defendant's daughter saw defendant and witness coming from the granery together. She stayed at the defendant's until her confinement. She had been guilty of improper conduct with a young man, a fellow servant named Webb. Martha Peers, residing at Mobberley, said that the complainant was confined at her house. The defendant came to see her, and said that he would pay for whatever was wanted, and he gave complainant half-a-crown. He said the complainant had been as good as a wife to him, and he would never forget her as long a she drew breath. - The defendant stated that he was seventy-two years of age, and had had thirteen children, ten of whom were living. He denied many of the statements made, but admitted that he could not say that he had not had improper intercourse with the complainant. - The Bench made an order of 1s. 8d. per week on the defendant." In the 1881 England Census Fanny was in the Workhouse with her four illegitimate children. Fanny used the name CRIMES at her 1882 marriage. CheshireBMD gives the location of the 1882 marriage as "Altrincham, Civil Marriage". CheshireBMD indexes the 1882 marriage in the names Fanny Crimes and Fanny Hall, suggesting that the father of Fanny's four illegitimate children was HALL.
