In the 1841 UK Census William "Wheelwright", Mary, Samuel and Ann were together in Runcorn From The Chester Chronicle of 5 April 1851 "CUTTING AND WOUNDING WITH INTENT. Samuel Chrimes, 21, wheelwright, was charged with cutting and wounding Thomas Davies, at Runcorn, with intent to do grievous bodily harm, also with intent to murder.... Verdict - Guilty with a recommendation to mercy. A sentence of death was recorded....." Also in 1851 Samuel was in Chester Prison having been convicted of "Cutting and wounding with intent to murder". He was sentenced to death, which was commuted to "Trans. for life". However, the UK records show that he married in 1865 so his transportation sentence must have been shortened. There are numerous records (FindMyPast) of Samuel's imprisonment, apparently on UK Prison Hulk ships and possibly overseas also, culminating in a record showing him received at Chatham prison on 22 August 1861 and 'Licensed' [released?] on 29 March 1862. Samuel's marriage record on Lan-OPC gives his father as 'William CHRIMES - Wheelwright'. |
