An apprenticeship record may apply: Robert Crimes indentured in 1723 to Thomas Gaskill of Warrington, Cordwainer for £9 0s.0d. From The Manchester Mercury of 8 October 1771: "Eloped from their Master's Service - [from] Robert Chrimes and Son, Slater and Malt-man in Warrington, about a Month ago - Thomas Jones about five Feet eight Inches high, had on when he went away, a blue Frize Coat and Waistcoat, and Ground Lamb Breeches; the other a young Man, about five Feet high, had on when he went away, a brown Coat and Waistcoat, and Fustian Breeches. If they both will return immediately to their Duty, no Questions will be asked; but if they neglect to do so after this Notice, a different Method will be taken with them. N.B. All Persons are hereby cautioned not to employ them." The burial record gives occupation as "slater" but gives age at death as 68 years, which is presumed to be an error. |
