CheshireBMD gives the location of the 1889 marriage as "Chester, Civil Marriage or Registrar Attended". From The Cheshire Observer of 6 January 1900: "LETTER FROM A KELSALL SOLDIER On Christmas Day Mr. and Mrs. John Crimes, Bank Cottage, Kelsall, received the following letter from their son, who is a sapper in the Royal Engineers:- Modder River, Dec. 1st. - Dear father and mother, - I received your letter, and was very pleased to hear from you. I am enjoying my out [sic] very much, only it is very wet. We are working first thing in the morning and last thing at night,. So far we have been engaged in three battles. We have only had one man wounded out of our lot from Crewe. I thought about home on the 28th of November, when we were ordered in the fighting line. I stood next to one that was shot, the Boer bullets coming on us like a hailstorm. We had to cross a river to where there were about 10,000 Boers, and we captured one of the leading men. The Boers have demolished the bridges, and the Modder River Bridge was blown up. I do not mind what hardships I undergo so that I come back safe. We have journeyed about 600 miles since we landed from the boat. I expect it will be next summer before we come back to England." Following the death of his first wife Martha, Thomas married Annie JONES in 1904. The following report from The Nantwich Guardian of 5 February 1915 MAY APPLY to this Thomas: "Trap Versus Motor-Car - Thomas Crimes, Church Copenhall, was summoned for on January 15th being drunk in charge of a horse and cart at Wybunbury. - P.C. Wilton said he heard a noise outside his house, and on going out to inquire saw a motor-car across the road and defendant's trap across the footpath. Witness took the horse away from the motor-car. He spoke to the defendant, and perceived that he was drunk, and told him so. Defendant said he did not think he was drunk. Witness said he was not fit to take charge of the horse and cart, but eventually allowed a man named Finch to drive him home. - Defendant said he had been out all day. Meeting a motor-car he tried to pull the horse to the left but it went to the right on the same side as the motor-car. - A fine of 10s. and costs was imposed." In 1921 Thomas was employed by 'L & N W Rly Works of West St., Crewe', but appears also to have been a farmer. In 2022 Brougton Road is semi-urban, semi-rural. There could have been farm(s) on Broughton Road in 1921. |
