Robert Arthur was known as Bob or R.A. From the Find-a-Grave record: "Robert Arthur Mayfield, R. A., was the middle child and second son of Arthur Steadley and Magnolia/Nola Harris Mayfield. R. A. lost his mother before his tenth birthday. R. A. moved from the farming community south of Gaffney to Columbia, SC to participate in the CCC's that President Roosevelt had introduced. R. A.'s interest, at that time, was repairing radios. However in 1942, WW II intervened and R. A. entered the army. While on maneuvers in the Nashville, TN area, R. A., now called Bob by the U. S. Army, met his future wife, Lillian Crymes. Years later Bob told his granddaughter that he had entered the service at the age of 26 and volunteered for overseas duty. Bob, who had never traveled outside the state of SC, was sent to Casablanca, Naples and Athens. He had been trained to help build hospitals, roads and "whatever else had to be done" to rid the world of people like Hitler and Mussolini. When Victory in Europe finally came, Bob was able to return to SC. Bob and Lillian Olivia Crymes were married December 22, 1945 in Nashville, TN. They were the parents of two daughters and a son that died in infancy. In 1959 his wife, Lillian, died of cancer. Bob worked for years as an electrician. When opportunities were limited in SC, he would travel to NY, CT, FL and numerous other locations along the east coast working in construction. His interests were sports and more sports. Robert Arthur (Bob) Mayfield was buried in the community where he grew up, located south of Gaffney, SC. His infant son and wife, Lillian, who had preceded him, were buried nearby in a small family plot. [In remembrance by his daughters.]" |
