Both John's marriage record and his burial record show him to be a resident of Crowton, and his will shows that he owned land in both Crowton and Norley, suggesting a link from the Norley branch to the Crowton or Weaverham branches. John appears in the Index to Death Duty Registers, but this gives simply "Chrimes Jno., Crowton, Chester." His inclusion in this research is based on the 1901 England Census, the script of which can be read as either CRIMES or CRINES but has been transcribed as CRIMES. From The Leeds Times of 23 March 1895: "A POLICEMAN'S LOT AT HUDDERSFIELD At the Huddersfield Police Court, John Crimes (24), dyer, of Birkby, has been charged with being drunk and disorderly, and Thomas Battye (26), millhand, of Birkby, was charged with obstructing the police. Defendants, with a number of other men, turned out of the Horse Shoes Inn, Birkby, on Saturday night, the 9th, at 11 o'clock. They stood on the pavement talking, but all went into the road with the exception of the defendants when asked to do so by Police-constable Pollock. They ultimately went home, but 10 or 15 minutes afterwards Crimes returned, having taken off his coat and waistcoat and began a disturbance. He refused to go home and Pollock seized him. A struggle ensued and both men fell to the ground. Pollock obtained the mastery and was just about to put on the 'snaps' when Battye came up from behind and pulled him off. Both men then ran home. The men were each fined 5s. and 8s. costs." I had thought that this may in fact be Josiah John CRIMES b.1868 Manchester but the 1901 and 1911 England census records give the place of birth of this John as Huddersfield. John's Marriage Certificate is in the name CRINES and the father's name is blank. In view of this John is unlikely to be descended from CRIMES, but is retained in this research to record the limited findings.
