A quick look at the United States Births, Marriages and Deaths records gives the impression that there have been, for instance, only about 40 people born CHRIMES who have lived in the United States. However, on closer inspection it becomes clear that these records cover only a small part of the story.

The availability of United States online records of births/marriages/deaths is not as comprehensive as it is for UK records. The situation is also complicated by the fact that the different States have released different amounts of data. Generally speaking, birth records only cover about half of the known births, and the situation is similar for marriages and deaths. Some divorce records are also available online. Although there are certainly omissions from the online records, where records do exist they are generally more informative than the equivalent UK records, offering significant clues to the parentage of the named individual. The latest record found is of a death which occured in March 2012, only one month before this was written.

There are several obituaries which have been placed in local newspapers by the family, which are then often available online. In many cases these obituaries have helped to establish the connections between family members which would not have been possible otherwise.

The records reveal a thankfully very small number of CHRIMES, CRIMES or CRYMES children born in the United States who died in infancy.

This research has identified 81 people born CHRIMES, 151 people named CRIMES and 777 people born CRYMES who have lived in the United States.

The United States Census records are a good source of data, comparable to the UK census records. The most recent widely available census is that for 1940 (cf. 1911 for UK).

Most children born in the United States have been given two forenames, starting from a earlier date than when this practice became common in the UK. This has helped to identify and distinguish individuals. However, another common United States practice of naming sons exactly the same as fathers can cause confusion. As in the UK, there are some children who were given a middle name representing the mother's (or grandmother's) maiden name - for example John Kappler CHRIMES, Eugene Proctor CHRIMES. Obituary records have revealed that shortened versions of forenames are in common use within the family, for example Chuck (Charles), Brad (Bradford), Bill (William), Larry (Lawrence). Official records do not necessarily use the proper names.

So far this research has found the following United States immigrations of males. In some cases, the person named immigrated with their wife and family who are not separately listed here.

Of the known immigrations, that of John CHRIMES b.1823 is perhaps the most significant in the establishment of the CHRIMES name in the United States, there being at least 33 of his CHRIMES descendants born there.

The establishment of the CHRIMES name in the United States is entirely due to immigration from the UK.
There are a few cases where the immigrants changed their name from CRIMES to CHRIMES upon entry to the United States.

There is only one (female) present-day CRIMES descendant of the CRIMES immigrants.

The establishment of the CRIMES name in the United States is not due to the immigration of a small number of people from the UK, but is presumed to be due to the naming of enslaved black people. Much more research is needed to confirm and elaborate on this presumption.

The establishment of the CRYMES name in the United States is entirely due to the immigration of William CRYMES b.1646 but there are two equally well established groups of people with the CRYMES name:

As we know the English ancestry of all of the white United States immigrants, they and their families appear on "branches" which already exist in this research. Thus there are no new United States branches. However, the vast majority of the black United States CRIMES and a large number of the black United States CRYMES are not connected to any branch, which is a significant shortcoming of this research.

Can you help? Do you have information about the above person?

In summary, we know of 81 people born with the name CHRIMES (though the true number may be nearer to 110) who have lived in the United States, more than 151 people named CRIMES and about 777 people born with the name CRYMES. A fuller picture of the last 50 years can only be achieved with help from United States contributors.
