First NameMiddle NameSurnameDate of BirthPlace of BirthNotes
JohnCRIMES1869Huddersfield, Yorkshire, EnglandI cannot find a birth record for John as either CRIMES or CRINES.
His inclusion in this research is based on the 1901 England Census, the script of which can be read as either CRIMES or CRINES but has been transcribed as CRIMES.
From The Leeds Times of 23 March 1895: "A POLICEMAN'S LOT AT HUDDERSFIELD At the Huddersfield Police Court, John Crimes (24), dyer, of Birkby, has been charged with being drunk and disorderly, and Thomas Battye (26), millhand, of Birkby, was charged with obstructing the police. Defendants, with a number of other men, turned out of the Horse Shoes Inn, Birkby, on Saturday night, the 9th, at 11 o'clock. They stood on the pavement talking, but all went into the road with the exception of the defendants when asked to do so by Police-constable Pollock. They ultimately went home, but 10 or 15 minutes afterwards Crimes returned, having taken off his coat and waistcoat and began a disturbance. He refused to go home and Pollock seized him. A struggle ensued and both men fell to the ground. Pollock obtained the mastery and was just about to put on the 'snaps' when Battye came up from behind and pulled him off. Both men then ran home. The men were each fined 5s. and 8s. costs."
I had thought that this may in fact be Josiah John CRIMES b.1868 Manchester but the 1901 and 1911 England census records give the place of birth of this John as Huddersfield.
John's Marriage Certificate is in the name CRINES and the father's name is blank. In view of this John is unlikely to be descended from CRIMES, but is retained in this research to record the limited findings.
Some of John's children are sometimes recorded with the names CRIMES and even CHRIMES.

WilliamCRIMESabt. 1685Cheshire, EnglandWilliam is head of the "Crowton" branch
RichardCRYMESabt. 1610Cheshire, EnglandRichard is known only from his marriage record.
I do not know who Richard's parents were.
This research shows an unproven connection to Richard CRIMES b.abt.1675 and thereby to branch "Warrington1".
Richard's wife's burial record declares that she was a widow at her death in 1653 so Richard died before that date.
SamuelCRIMES1784Kingswinford, Staffordshire, EnglandSamuel's marriage and children are recorded in a family bible inscription submitted by Jessica CHRIMES.
Samuel's wife Sarah appears on the 1861 census as "widow" so Samuel must have died between 1851 and 1861. The death record is chosen for that reason only.
Samuel is head of the branch "Staffordshire".
In 1841 Samuel declared that he had been born in Staffordshire, and in 1851 he declared that he had been born specifically at Kingswinford, Staffordshire. I cannot find any record of the baptism of Samuel, but as he appears not to have had any of his own children baptised, this is perhaps not surprising, though the existence of a family bible which he owned tends to suggest otherwise.
JohnCRIMESabt. 1820Cheshire, EnglandDespite the marriage record which gives father's name as William CRIMES, this may be John CRIMES b.1818 Tarvin, the illegitimate son of Mary CRIMES b.1798 Tarvin.
No. of CRIMES descendants: 1 female
WilliamCHRIMESabt. 1715Cheshire, EnglandWilliam is known only from the birth records of his children: Ellen, Anne and Elizabeth in Cuddington, Cheshire.
The baptism record for his daughter Ellen describes William as "of the Brin" possibly referring to Bryn, Cuddington.

JohnCRIMESabt. 1875Staffordshire, EnglandThis person is identified from the Birth Certificate of his son Michael John CHRIMES.
The 1895 marriage was between John GRIMES and Annie O'BRYAN but almost certainly applies to this John, and tells us that his ancestors may have been GRIMES.
In the 1901 Wales Census John claimed to have been born in Staffordshire (place unknown) and to be 20 years old, but this age cannot be trusted as his wife (died 1897) was born in 1868.

ThomasCHRIMESabt. 1795EnglandThis Thomas is known only from his marriage record.
This is not Thomas b.1793 who married Mary UNKNOWN and had children John (1847) and Leah (1850).
Philip CRIMES has suggested that this may be the Thomas born 1785 Cuddington to William CHRIMES and Elizabeth PICTON.
This is entirely credible, but the two Thomas's remain separate in this database for the moment.
CHRIMES descendants: 1
WilliamCHRIMESabt. 1753Cheshire, EnglandWilliam was a shoemaker.
A 1753 Weaverham baptism giving William's father as William may relate to this William.
CHRIMES descendants: 4
JohnCHRIMES1731Cheshire, EnglandBoth John's gravestone inscription and Sharon Chrimes's research give John's birth year as 1730/31, but I can find no record of such birth, the nearest being 1724 or 1734. Could John have been born elsewhere than Weaverham Parish?
Both John's marriage record and his burial record show him to be a resident of Crowton, and his will shows that he owned land in both Crowton and Norley, suggesting a link from the Norley branch to the Crowton or Weaverham branches.
John appears in the Index to Death Duty Registers, but this gives simply "Chrimes Jno., Crowton, Chester."
I have transcribed John's will and codicil which unsurprisingly do not help identify his birth or parents. The will names his sons Joseph, Thomas and John in that order, and names his daughter 'Sarah Holland'. The will also includes a bequest to "Elizabeth Aimson of Acton near Weaverham in the said County, Spinster, natural Daughter of Ann Aimson late of the same place, Spinster, deceased, the Sum of Twenty pounds". Was this Elizabeth a child of John?
John is head of the branch "Norley".

WilliamCRIMESabt. 1757EnglandWilliam's birth year is calculated from his age at burial.
William is head of the branch "Chester".
SamuelCRIMESabt. 1735Cheshire, EnglandThe marriage to Mary TOWERS at Over is consistent with Samuel's residence declared at the Davenham baptism of his children: Wharton (now part of Winsford).
As Samuel's first child Nancy was baptised 7 months after the marriage, Samuel may have preferred to have his children baptised a little away from home, ie. Davenham rather than Over.
The connection between Samuel and Over is strengthened by the burial of his daugther Martha there in 1763.
S Wylie, who is descended from Samuel. has been unable to establish his parentage.
The baptism record for Samuel's granddaughter Esther PLUMLEY in 1804 gives Samuel's abode as Liverpool.

RobertCRIMESabt. 1690Cheshire, EnglandI cannot find a birth record for Robert, but his two marriages are recorded, as are the baptisms of his children.
Robert is head of the branch "Ollerton"
Philip Crimes has developed the following theory: "I... feel I can make a strong, if unsubstantiated, case for his being a son of Joseph CRIMES of Acton. Robert was married, firstly in 1715 at a time when the average age of marriage was 27 or 28 years. If he conformed to the average then he could have been born in the late 1680s, coinciding nicely with the marriage of Joseph CRIMES and Mary Williamson in 1687 cannot explain why he was named Robert, possibly after Joseph's grandfather Robert d 1647 or Joseph's uncle Robert d 1681. However, the naming of Robert's children adds strength to my supposition:
Anne CRIMES, eldest dau b 1716, do not know the name of her mother Mary Moors parents to help make an assessment
Joseph CRIMES b 1719 eldest son, named after Robert's father Joseph CRIMES?
Samuel CRIMES b 1721, 2nd son, named after Robert's brother Samuel b 1699?
Mary CRIMES b 1722, 2nd dau, named after Robert's mother Mary nee WILLIAMSON?
Hannah CRIMES b 1724 3rd dau, named after Robert's aunt Hanna b1669 dau of Robert CHRIMES of Gorstage, who m. Philip BILLINGTON?
John CRIMES b 1727, 3rd son, named after Robert's father in law John HENSHAW of Withington?
Sarah CRIMES d 1736, 4th dau named after Robert's wife Sarah HENSHAW?
Robert CRIMES b 1734, 4th son named after Robert himself?
A final pointer to my suggested link is the intriguing burial in Weaverham on 30 May 1703 of Mary (Maria in BT) CHRIMES of Mobberley. Could she have been the wife of Joseph CRIMES of Acton, lending further credibility to the move from Weaverham to Ollerton."
In my opinion the 1703 Weaverham burial of a Mary resident at Mobberley is more convincing than the children's names, but overall I am not sufficiently convinced to make the father/son link in this database.

William's three sons who survived to adulthood all used the name GRIMES, so William has no CRIMES descendants
JohnCRIMES1756EnglandThe place of John's marriage, Ecclesfield, is now a district of Sheffield.
The later return of his son Enoch to Sheffield is a useful link.
John's birth year is taken from a 1784 marriage license record, (FindMyPast) which also gives both his and his bride Elizabeth's full names. This record also gives the residence of both John and Elizabeth as Ecclesfield.
I cannot find a birth record for John.
John is head of the branch "Sheffield".

On the 1900 US Federal Census, living with Isaac and Silvey was Charles OVERBY b.1876 Virginia, 'S[on] in Law', 'S[ingle]' (inconsistent) but not Charles' wife.
Also living with them was Gurtie BRUCE, age 8, 'Servant'!
Also on that census, Isaac and Silvey declared that they had been married for 25 years, which would make all of their six known children illegitimate, so may be incorrect.
On the 1920 US Federal Census, Isaac was declared as 'W'[idowed], age 81. The only other Crymes in that household was a 'Vicey Crymes', female, age 9, 'Cook'!

PeterCRYMES1835VirginiaPeter is known only from the 1870 US Federal Census and from his marriage records.
The 1866 marriage record gives Peter's parents' names as Peter and Winnie.
The 1891 marriage record is believed to relate to this Peter ('widower'), as it gives Peter's parents' names as 'P' and 'W', and the location is credible, despite Peter declaring his age to be 41 when he was in fact 51.
