In 1921 Frederick Joseph was attending school 'Whole Time'. From The Buckingham Advertiser and Free Press of 10 June 1933: Missing Cycle. 'Stolen' from Stratford Picture Palace. Frederick Joseph Chrimes (18), a hotel porter, of Mile Oak Hotel, Mile Oak, near Tamworth, was charged at Stony Stratford, with stealing a cycle, value £7, at Stony Stratford on May 11th. P.C. J.C. McCarthy, of Heath and Reach, said that he was on a motor cycle patrol with P.C. Blight, on May 13th, on the Watling Street at Tilsworth, and saw the prisoner riding a new Raleigh sports cycle from the direction of London. Accused was not wearing trouser clips, and he said he had bought the cycle. They found a Stony Stratford transfer on the machine and accused said: "I stole the cycle from the shed at the picture palace, Stony Stratford. I left my old cycle in its place." Chrimes pleaded guilty and was committed to the Quarter Sessions, with a recommendation for Borstal treatment. ..." From The Buckinghamshire Examiner of 30 June 1933: "..Bucks Quarter Sessions at Aylesbury on Monday... FATHER'S BLUNT DESCRIPTION Frederick Joseph Chrimes, 19, barman, appeared before the Court with a view of being committed for Borstal treatment. Chrimes had been arrested and charged with stealing a cycle... Defendant had been previously convicted and bound over, the charge being one of stealing money. Supt. Ernest Callaway stated that the lad was a native of Birmingham, and was described as a dull scholar while at school. The lad had left home six times, and on each occasion stole money, on one occasion £16. The lad's character as given by the father was 'mentally deficient and uncontrollable'. The Court committed defendant to a Borstal Institution for three years, the Chairman remarking that he was uncontrolled, if not uncontrollable, and the Borstal Institution would give him a period of discipline." This conviction and sentence are confirmed by the appearance of Frederick Joseph on a 'Habitual Criminals' register of 1933 (FindMyPast). I could not initially find a marriage record for Frederick Joseph, but there is a marriage record for Frederick J CHIMES marries Dilys BOYCE 1950 Q4 at Smethwick, Birmingham. There was in fact a Frederick J CHIMES born London in 1922 who could have been this person, but by obtaining the birth certificate of Frederick Joseph's first child David, I have been able to show that this marriage record is for Frederick Joseph CHRIMES, the name having been recorded incorrectly. This conclusion is supported by a notice in The Birmingham Daily Gazette of 15 November 1950: "FORTHCOMING MARRIAGES - CHRIMES-BOYCE The marriage will take place on Saturday, November 18, 2.30, at St. Mary's, Bearwood, between Fredrick [sic], son of the late Mr. and Mrs. F.[sic] Chrimes, of Ladywood, to Dilys, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Boyce, of 206, Park Road, Bearwood." |
