School Admission record (FindMyPast) gives date of birth as 16 November 1879, which may be correct as to day and month. "Thomas" was admitted to Hudson Road Boys School, Sunderland on 9 January 1893. The admission record is annotated "No parents live". He left that school on 30 November 1893 with the comment "Monitor". From The Shields Daily Gazette of 16 August 1902: "MARINE ENGINEERS' EXAMINATIONS The following were successful candidates in these examinations held at North Shields during the past week:- Tom Crimes, ..." I cannot find Tom on the 1911 UK Census. On the day of the 1921 England and Wales Census, Tom, his wife Catherine Jane and their daughter Kathleen Clare were residing on a ship which was in dry dock at Newport in South Wales. The ship, 'Gambia River', was a 'Cargo Steamer'. The Captain was absent, Tom was Chief Engineer with Catherine Jane and Kathleen Clare declared as 'Passengers'. This arrangement seems strange. Kathleen Clare was just 4 years old. In 1921 Tom was employed by British Empire Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. of London. See 1939 Register record for wife Catherine Jane, for occupation at date of death. From The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette of 24 June 1938: "DEATHS - CRIMES - At 2 Belle Vue Road, Westcross, Swansea, on June 21 [sic], Tom, the beloved husband of Catherine Crimes. Funeral Saturday, 11.30, at Oystermouth Cemetery, Swansea." Tom's Grant of Probate reads: "CRIMES Tom of 2 Belle Vue Road West Cross Swansea died 20 June 1938 at the Swansea General and Eye Hospital Swansea. Probate Carmarthen 23 August to Catherine Jane Crimes widow. Effects: £2162 6s. 2d." From The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette of 14 September 1938: "CLEADON MAN'S WILL Mr. Tom Crimes, of 2 Bellevue Road, West Cross, Swansea, formerly of Whitburn Road, Cleadon, marine engineer, who died on June 20, has left estate of the gross value of £2,216 6s. 2d, with net personalty £1,945 17s. 7d.
