The 1921 England Census does not narrow down Mary Ellen's month of birth because her father Harry did not complete the return fully. In 1921 Mary Ellen was attending school 'Whole Time'. Mary Ellen's burial record (DeceasedOnline) reads: "Salford City Cemetery; 311333; March 1; Mary Ellen Crimes; 36 years; 98 Salford Brow, Cheetham, Manchester; Roman Catholic; Grave 1053; Plot A9; Class C" In the burial register, immediately below the entry for Mary Ellen, is the entry for Joseph CRIMES who died aged 9 hours, and who is buried in the same grave as Mary Ellen. I conclude that Joseph was the illegitimate child of Mary Ellen, and that both mother and child died at the birth. |
