The 1818 birth record (from Richard's gravestone) and his 1919 baptism record are somewhat at odds. In 1845, the Partnership between the brothers Peter, Edward and Richard CHRIMES was dissolved by mutual consent, the business at that time being described as "Plumbers and Glaziers, and Brass Manufacturers". On the 1851 census, Richard and Mary had no children (living with them) but Richard's sister-in-law Emma Myers was staying with them. In 1856 Richard took out a patent for "Improvements in buffers and other springs for railway and other carriages." On the 1861 census, Richard and Mary were given the name CRIMES. They had Emma with them again, this time as Emma CRAVEN, widow. There were also other relatives. On the 1871 census, Richard and Mary had staying with them: Hannah Myers Mother-in-law and Mary Myers Sister-in-law From The Barnsley Chronicle of 24 June 1871: "ROTHERHAM - A HOUSE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING - A terrific thunderstorm broke over Rotherham on Monday, a little before noon, during which rain and hail fell in torrents for about an hour. The peals of thunder were fast and loud, and the flashes of lightning were vivid in the extreme. The electric fluid left plain traces of its visit in Whiston-grove, for about twelve o'clock it appeared in the form of a ball of fire, fell upon the carriage premises of Richard Chrimes, Esq., rending one of the walls, then ascended and struck the gable of the gardener's house, and entered that part knocking the chimney completely off. Several of the slates were also removed, and the fireplace and mantel-piece in one of the lower rooms were hurled from their setting into the room, and the gas-pipes much twisted by the action of the fluid. It is supposed that the lightning was attracted towards the house by an iron chimney pot which was placed on one of the stacks." In 1886 Richard was executor to the will of Sarah Ann Chrimes of Brighton. He was Sarah Ann's cousin. The National Probate calendar gives date of death as 26 April 1897 whereas Richard's gravestone gives 27 April 1897. From the Mid Sussex Times of 24 August 1897: "The will (dated March 31, 1884) of Mr. Richard Chrimes, of Moorgate Grange, Rotherham, Yorkshire, a member and liberal supporter of the religious community known as the Brethren, who died on April 26 last, aged 78 years, leaving personal estate of the gross value of £100,062 2s. 2d., and of the net value of £99,333 12s. 4d., has been proved by his widow, Mrs. Mary Chrimes, to whom the testator devised and bequeathed all his real and personal estate absolutely." Richard's Probate Record reads: "CHRIMES Richard of Moorgate Grange Rotherham Yorkshire Gentleman died 26 April 1897 Probate London 2 August to Mary Chrimes widow Effects: £100,062 2s 2d". Richard appears on the Index to Death Duty Registers in 1897. |
