I cannot find a birth record for Edward. On the 1841 census (the only one we have for him) he is declared as NOT born in Yorkshire. Searching for Edward's marriage between 1808 (Lydia 18) and 1816 (birth of first child) I find just one possible marriage, in Sheffield in 1813 between Edward CRIMES and Lydia SHILLITO. This is presumed to be correct. There is an interesting online index record (FindMyPast 'Yorkshire, Sheffield Social And Institutional Records 1558-1939' dated 1825 for 'E Chrimes' giving Place: 'Sheffield', Other Details: 'Rotherham' and Document Title: 'Sheffield and Rotherham banks resolution'. Edward is on the 1841 census but has been mis-transcribed by ancestry to have the name GRIMES. His wife Lydia was a widow in 1851, so Edward died between 1841 and 1851. Edward's son Edward b.1816 also died in that same decade. There is only one death record in the deaths index (for 1847). Following careful consideration of information and guidance provided by Philip CRIMES, I now believe that Edward CHRIMES, the founder of the Rotherham CHRIMES family was in fact born to Peter CHRIMES and Ann HATTON in Warrington. Inspection of the Death Duty Registers at the National Archives in London has confirmed that Edward's date of death was 7 January 1845, consistent with the Warrington parish record of his burial. On that basis, I believe the link between Rotherham and Warrington to be correct. Edward was head of the branch "Rotherham" which has now been linked to the "Warrington" branch. Edward appears in the Index to Death Duty Registers for 1846, giving address as 'Rotherham, Yorks' and executrix as 'Lydia Chrimes'. |
