This is Joseph the shoemaker from Weaverham, Cheshire. I had estimated a birth year of 1795 for this Joseph and had concerns about Joseph's age when his last child was born. However, having subsequently established that Joseph's wife Sarah was 15 years his junior, the birth year of 1778 is credible From The Chester Chronicle of 12 October 1804: "TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION ... All that MESSUAGE or DWELLING-HOUSE, with YARD, GARDEN and OUTBUILDINGS situate and being in Church-street, in Weaverham aforesaid, as the same are now in the possession or occupation of Mr. Joseph Crimes, shoe-maker. ..." Joseph had married Elizabeth KAY in 1807 but she died 2 months later, partly explaining why Joseph's child-bearing marriage did not start until he was age 35. Joseph left a will dated 18 Jan 1843, which may be the date of proving. Joseph appears on the Index to Death Duty Registers for 1843 as 'Joseph Chrimes of Hulme, Manchester - executor Joseph Chrimes.' |
