I have not been able to find a baptism record for Mary. In 1841 siblings Richard, Sarah and Mary were living with their widowed father and his widowed mother (their grandmother). The merging of Mary CHRIMES b.1837 Crowton, daughter of Nathaniel CHRIMES shoemaker, with Mary CHRIMES who married Joseph CLAYTON in 1853 at Culcheth in Lancashire requires that the birthplace of the latter (Worsley, Lancashire) was incorrectly declared on the 1851 England Census. However, this is not unusual where the person is a servant in a large household. Mary had her illegitimate child Maria at Newton-in-Makerfield in 1852, just 5 miles from Culcheth. Kenyon, where Mary was resident in 1851, is half way between Newton and Culcheth. The death of Mary in 1859 at Leigh District was at the age of 23, which is unusual and aligns with the 1837 birth year of Mary of Crowton. The burial record also gives age at death as 23 and residence as Kenyon. Mary married the farmer's son Joseph at Culcheth in 1853 (he "37", she "18"). The marriage register image is available on FindMyPast, so there would be nothing gained by purchasing the marriage certificate. The marriage register gives Mary's father's name and occupation as "-", suggesting that she might be illegitimate. |
