The details given on the Birth Certificate (GRO Digital Image) are:- Born: 11 March 1852 at Mill Street, Newton. Name: Maria, Girl. Father: blank. Mother: Mary Crimes. Father's Occupation: blank. Informant: X The Mark of Mary Crimes, mother of Mill Street, Newton. Registered: 13 March 1852. The baptism record gives the parents as "/,Mary CRIMES" In trying to find the particular Mary CRIMES who was Maria's mother, I find that there were indeed two CRIMES/CHRIMES families living at Mill Street, Newton-in-Makerfield in 1851, but those families did not include a Mary. Perhaps Mary was a relative who was temporarily resident at Mill Street. The TWO households at Mill Street in 1851 were: 1. Thomas BATE b.abt.1820 + Esther Bate née CHRIMES (of Crowton) + BATE children: Ellen, Elizabeth, Ann, Thomas and Esther 2. Robert HALL b.1818 Newton + Eliza Hall née CHRIMES (of Crowton) + HALL children: William, Alfred, Sarah Jane and Robert Esther and Eliza were sisters. They had a sister Mary b.1814 Weaverham, but she died 1833 Crowton. However, Mary CHRIMES b.1837 Crowton was the niece of Esther CHRIMES and of Eliza CHRIMES. That Mary is presumed to be the mother of Maria. It is possible that Mary was looked after by one or both of her aunts at Newton-in-Makerfield during her confinement in 1852. Sadly Maria died at the age of 10 weeks. |
