In the 1921 England Census Charles declared his place of birth to be 'Holdbury, Warwickshire' which I take to be 'Oldbury' near West Bromwich, though it seems that Oldbury has never been part of Warwickshire. In the 1921 England Census Charles made several errors in his declaration of the ages of himself and his family. None of the declared ages are used here. In 1921 Charles was 'Employer' working 'At Home' implying that his home and his shop were at the same address. From The Staffordshire Sentinel of 24 March 1932: "HANLEY LICENSEE'S DEATH Mr. Charles Chrimes, aged 70, licensed victualler, of 142, Leek-road, Hanley, died at his home at 1:30 a.m. to-day. He appeared to be in his usual health on retiring last night, but shortly afterwards was seized by a fit of coughing. He had previously suffered two strokes, the first four years ago, and the second last October." It is notable that Charles did not "give away" his daughter Florence Lilian at her wedding in 1928, perhaps due to ill health. From The Staffordshire Sentinel of 24 March 1938: "IN MEMORIAM CHRIMES - Treasured memories of Charles, beloved husband of Florence Chrimes, who died March 24th, 1932. Always remembered by Wife, Daughters and Sons-in-law." Charles's Grant of Probate record reads: "CHRIMES Charles of The Village Tavern Leek Road Hanley Stoke-on-Trent died 24 March 1932 Probate London 10 May to Florence Amelia Ward Chrimes widow William Faulkner contractor and Bertram Hobson commercial traveller. Effects £1932 11s." Charles and his second wife Florence Amelia Ward were buried in the same grave. |
