George was named CRIMES at birth. I believe that the 1920 San Francisco residence refers to this George, despite his name being given as George F as his brothers John William and Harold also settled in California in the 1920s, and the 1881 Wales birth as given on the 1920 census is unusual but correct. George Fred was drafted into the US army in September 1918, so probably did not see service. At the time of his draft registration, George Fred was living with Mary E in Detroit, Michigan. I do not know whether George Fred and Mary E had any children, either in the US or UK. There is a UK death record for George Frederick CHRIMES b.Nov.1882 (1 year out) in 1972 in Ashton, Lancashire George Fred and Mary Esther returned to England, perhaps as early as 1935, which is where they died. The 1936 Manchester Rate Books record has the name crossed through, suggesting that George Fred had vacated the property before the Rate Book was finalised. The property was 'House & Shop', consistent with the 1939 Register record, though not at the same address. In the 1939 Register George Fred and Mary Esther were named 'Fred' and 'Esther', their identities being confirmed by their dates of birth. From The Manchester Evening News of 16 February 1972: "Legal Notices - RE: GEORGE FREDERICK CHRIMES (deceased) and MARY ESTHER CHRIMES (deceased). We regret to announce the death of the above named deceased on the 1st. April 1971, and the 20th February 1971. Would any person, firm or company having a claim against Mr. George Frederick Chrimes or Mrs. Mary Esther Chrimes write to us within fourteen days of the date of this announcement setting out the terms of any claim which it is proposed can be made." |
