John appears on the 1861 UK Census as "Grandson" of the head, John Steel, but more probably the grandson of his wife Mary Ann WEBB, who had been married to Robert CHRIMES before marrying John STEEL, However, I do not have a child of that CHRIMES=WEBB marriage who could be John's father. This leaves the possibility that John was the illegitimate son of one of the CHRIMES=WEBB daughters Martha or Mary. There is a baptism record for John CRIMES Lower Peover 29 March 1855 Parents: "/, Mary CRIMES" which supports this, so is chosen. John's marriage record gives his father's name as William CRIMES. I presume this to be John's attempt to legitimise his birth. From The Northwich Guardian of 30 January 1875: "This is to give notice that I, John Crimes, of Lostock Gralam, will not be responsible for any debts my wife, Ann Crimes, may contract after this date. Lostock, January 30th, 1875." In the 1891 UK Census, John and his family were given the name CHRIMES, though this was transcribed as CRIMES. This name change only occured on the one Census, so is discounted. John's Grant of Probate reads: "CRIMES John of Dairy Farm Davenham near Northwich Cheshire died 24 October 1933 at Dunkeld Nursing Home Hartford near Northwich. Probate Chester 26 January [1934] to Joseph Crimes gardener. Effects: £256 15s." I presume that the Joseph granted probate was John's son. |
