William was named William CRIMES at birth. The first use of the name John is in the marriage record, which is in the name John William CHRIMES. John William and Christiana appear to have emigrated to Canada in 1914 or 1915. John William was in the British Army for 8 years, and subsequently enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1915 to join the WWI Expeditionary Force. In March 1919 Christina [sic] arrived back in Canada, giving her destination as Victoria (BC). In answer to "Have you been to Canada before?" she replied 'yes', for 2 years from 1914. This fits with a 1916 documented voyage. Christiana was travelling with her 4 month old son James [Brameld] CHRIMES, who died on 29 June 1919 in Victoria, BC, Canada. In October 1920 John William and Christina [sic] arrived in Seattle, Washington State, US from Victoria, BC, Canada bound for San Francisco, California, USA So in the 1920s the three brothers (John) William, Harold and George (F) and their wives were settled in San Francisco. In June 1932 John William and Christiana arrived in Liverpool, England, from Canada, bound for 46 Russell Street, Moss Side, Manchester. They gave their place of permanent residence as USA, so this may have been just a visit rather than a re-settlement. I don't know when John William and Christiana moved to Australia, but they appear on the Electoral Roll in Sydney in 1943. John William's death notice in The Sydney Morning Herald of 2 August 1951 reads: "CHRIMES John William July 30 1951 dearly beloved husband of Christiana Chrimes of 8 Fleming Street, Wollstonecraft and loved brother, brother-in-law and uncle of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Chrimes and family. Privately cremated" |
