Edward's birth, baptism and marriage records are in the name CRIMES. Between 1889 and 1901 Edward changed his family's name from CRIMES to CHRIMES. Edward appears on the 1911 census in the name CHRIMES. In the 1911 UK Census Edward declared that three of his children had died, of whom I have identifed two. From The Liverpool Echo of 20 August 1917: "CHRIMES - August 18, at 1, Chester-road, Neston, Chester, aged 54 years, Edward, the dearly-beloved husband of Louie Chrimes Interment at Neston Parish Church, on Wednesday next, at 3.30. (Friends accept this - the only intimation.) From The Chester Chronicle of 25 August 1917: "DEATH OF MR. E. CRIMES[sic]. - Some few weeks ago reference was made in these columns to the serious illness of our respected townsman, Mr. E Chrimes and a hope was expressed that a turn for the best would take place in due time. These hopes, however, were frustrated owing to the malignant desease from which the deceased suffered. His medical attendant did all that was possible and as a last resource a specialist was called in a short time ago, and pronounced the case as hopeless. On Saturday he passed peacefully away at the age of 5? years. A month or two ago no one would have thought his system was undermined to this extent. He appeared robust and strong, and his illness was thought to be only a temporary breakdown, and that a short holiday at Buxton would put him right. These prognostications, however, did not materialise, and he returned home much worse, and lingered for a few weeks only. Mr. Chrimes was an extremely busy man. For about 20 years his chandlery business was of an excellent character, supplying local and district wants, and also during this period he established a motor garage, where repairs to all kinds of machines could be effected. His demise will be a distinct loss to Neston. A sad feature in connection with his death is the pathetic figure of his wife lying helpless with acute rheumatism for nearly seven years, and the greatest sympathy of the many friends of the family is extended to them in their irreparable loss and bereavement......The deceased being a member of the Shepherds' Club, the members attended, and the customary ritual in connection with this society was gone through...." Edward's Administration record reads: "CHRIMES Edward of 1 Chester Road, Neston, Cheshire chandler and motor cycle dealer and repairer died 18 August 1917. Administration Chester 12 December to Louisa Chrimes widow. Effects £1045 11s 1d" |
