The Births Index (GRO) record gives mother's maiden name as JONES.
The 1881 UK Census gives George's place of birth as Liverpool, contrary to his birth registration.
George was named GRIMES at his marriage and named himself and his children GRIMES thereafter, though he was named CRIMES on the 1891 UK Census.
The following report from The Cheshire Observer of 22 May 1886 MAY APPLY to this George: "COUNTY PETTY SESSIONS - A POACHER George Crimes was brought up in custody an a warrant charged with night-poaching on land in the occupation of Mr Stephen Davies, and over which Mr. Henry Croft Allitson has the right of shooting, at Little Stanney, on the 2nd May. Mr. W.H. Churton prosecuted and prisoner was undefended. Mr. Churton said Crimes and a man named Venables were summoned in the first instance, but did not appear, and warrants were issued, but Venables had not yet been apprehended. Crimes was a well-known poacher, who, a little time ago, was fined for poaching, and he was known then to make the observation that he would 'take out' the fine then indicted in rabbits. A watch was accordingly set on his movements, and on the night in question, he was seen by James Scott, Mr. Allitson's gamekeeper, and Police Constable Wilkinson to leave his cottage about midnight, and to return with Venables at three o'clock next morning. On being searched three nets and a number of pegs, several rabbits, and a hedgehog were found upon the two men. Crimes, who now virtually admitted the offence and asked to be dealt with leniently (observing that he meant leaving off such habits), was fined 40s, including costs, or a month's hard labour. His father promised to pay in week."
The following report from The Cheshire Observer of 19 March 1892 MAY APPLY to this George: "CHESTER CASTLE PETTY SESSIONS. THEFT OF POULTRY AT STANNEY. Peter Challinor and George Crimes were charged in custody with stealing three hens and a cockerel (value 12s 6d.), the property of Stephen Davies, farmer, Little Stanney. Mr. E.S. Giles prosecuted and Mr. E Brassey defended. The fowls were stolen on the previous Saturday evening, and the next day, by following feathers and footmarks which corresponded with a pair of boots worn by Crimes, they were found buried in a dung heap. Prisoners were arrested by Sergeant Jackson, of Ellesmere Port. Mr. Brassey denied that his clients were guilty, and contended that the case was one of suspicion only. Challinor was dismissed, and Crimes, who has been frequently before the magistrates, was sentenced to three calendar months imprisonment."
In 1921 George was employed by Huntingtons & Co. Road Contractors & Engineers at Ellesmere Port.
In the 1921 England Census George and Ann had living with them their two children and five boarders.
