Ernest emigrated to Australia in 1908 with Wilfred Robert CHRIMES, also of Norley.
Ernest married in Australia in 1912, but he returned to England in 1925, without his wife.
From The Crewe Chronicle of 25 July 1925: "OAKMERE PETTY SESSIONS - CALL FROM AUSTRALIA - NORLEY MAN AND HIS WIFE Ernest Chrimes, now employed as a farm labourer at School Bank, Norley, was summoned to show cause why he should not maintain his wife, Susan Edith Chrimes, of Haberfield, New South Wales, the case having been remitted from the Australian court. Mr. H.P. Rigby, who defended, said his client went out to Autsralia in 1908 and in October 1912 married complainant, with whom he lived in rooms at Leichthardt, later going to Haberfield, where they remained until March of the present year. Defendant would tell the court that this was the first he had heard of the case, and that the reason why he left Australia was that his wife had told him to "get out and go", and not only that, but during the preceding six months had refused him marital relations. During the whole of their married life the wife had refused to have any children, and on several occasions when she had been pregnant she had taken steps to prevent a birth taking place. In March, when the wife told defendant to clear out, she used strong language and told the husband that she did not want a beast like him about the place. The house was sold up and defendant gave his wife £25, a sewing machine, and clothing and effects, which he valued at £30. Defendant had had no communication with his wife, and it would appear that immediately he had joined the boat for England the complainant had gone to the court and obtained an order against him. He (Mr. Rigby) submitted that the order made in the Australian court should not be confirmed, as the wife had refused this man his marital rights, and she was, moreover, able to earn her own living as a dressmaker. The Magistrates' Clerk read the depositions taken at the children's court at Burwood, which showed that complainant had told the magistrate that the defendant had deserted her and that prior to doing so he had been paying attentions to another woman, while he had promised to send her money when he arrived in England. Her husbnad, stated complainant, was a carpenter earning £5 a week, and she could give no reason for his leaving her. She asked for 30s. per week maintenance. In evidence, defendant admitted the marriage, and the wife's depositions up to March 24th. She had given him cause to pay attentions to other women, because she had refused him all marital rights for six months before he left for England. He booked passages to England for himslef and his wife, but the doctor advised that his wife should not travel and he cancelled one passage. He was uncomfortable in the home owing to his wife's nagging and constant fault-finding. He was willing to maintain his wife if she would come over to this country. She had refused to have children, and this was a reason for the differences between them. He confirmed his advocate's statement that he gave his wife £25 in cash, a sewing machine value £10, and £30 worth of effects, and said his wife told him to clear out, and never dare to write to her. In spite of what had happened, he was willing to make an allowance of 10s. a week. The Court made an order for the payment of ten shillings a week."
Ernest's wife Susan Edith died in Australia in 1930.
In the 1939 Register Ernest was correctly declared to be a Widower.
Ernest's Grant of Probate record reads: "CHRIMES Ernest of Pitchley's Hollow Norley Cheshire died 8 June 1953 at Westminster House 241 Westminster Road Liverpool Probate London 18 November to Alan Bostock Chrimes motor engineer. Effects £2052 17s. 7d." Alan Bostock Chrimes was Ernest's nephew.
