From Crymes of London, Devon and Surrey by Philip A Crimes: "Despite the difficult financial situation, Amos had gone up to Oxford University, matriculating at Exeter College in March 1748 at the age of twenty. Within a year of going up, Amos met Elizabeth Shilfox of Oxford, and the couple were married at Waterperry near Oxford on 26 April 1749. Amos graduated from the university in 1751 with the degree of B.A." Amos "senior" was a minister of the church, like his son. From Crymes of London, Devon and Surrey by Philip A Crimes: "In 1770, Amos suffered the tragic loss of his wife Elizabeth shortly after she had given birth to their fifteenth child, George. She was buried on 19 July, at the age of 42 years. With a young family needing care, Amos remarried. His second wife was Mary Copestake, the daughter of Joseph Gough of Stoke Damerel, who was a widow and some five years younger than Amos. The marriage took place at Stoke Damerel on 5 February 1774, the ceremony being performed by Amos’s eldest son, Amos, junior, who was by then a curate." |
