Joseph was named CRIMES at birth. Although the census records give Joseph's birth year as 1809/10 the only credible Weaverham baptism record on CPRdb gives his birth and baptism in 1807 so this is presumed correct. It also agrees with his father's name being John (see below). It also agrees with his death record. I believe that Joseph married twice. From The Chester Courant of 29 March 1831: "MARRIAGES On the 16th instant, at the Friends' Meeting House, Morley, near Wilmslow, Joseph Crimes, of Manchester, to Sarah Wright, of Morley." In 1851 Joseph was living in Fulshaw (Wilmslow) with his first wife Sarah. 'Manchester Rate Books' records include several entries for a 'Jos'h Crimes' who owned properties in Chorlton at 7 New York Street, Moreton Street, 15 New York Street and 14 Catherine Street during the period 1849-54. This person is the most likely candidate for those records, but I cannot be certain. It is also interesting that in 1863 the 'occupier' of 15 New York Street was a 'Henry Chrimes' who may be Joseph's son Henry Cash CHRIMES. In 1861 Joseph was still living in Fulshaw (Wilmslow) with his first wife Sarah. Interestingly with them was Joseph's father John aged 80 born Weaverham. Joseph's first wife Sarah died in 1870. The 1876 marriage took place at Wilmslow, Society of Friends (Quaker). Joseph was still alive in 1881 aged 72 living in Fulshaw (Wilmslow) with his second wife Elizabeth. I cannot find Joseph or Elizabeth on the 1891 census, but by 1901 Elizabeth was a widow, so Joseph died between 1881 and 1901. Joseph's Proving of Will statement reads: "CHRIMES Joseph 22 January [1884] The Will of Joseph Chrimes late of Oaklands Wilmslow in the County of Chester Commission Agent who died 19 August 1883 at the Oaklands was proved at Chester by Isaac Massey of Chorley in the said county Contractor and Builder and James Wood of Lindow Grove School Alderley Road Fulshaw Schoolmaster the Executors. Personal Estate £1,243 1s 10d" Joseph's will is accessible online at FamilySearch.org. |
