From The Dudley Chronicle of 22 May 1915: "FROM SUNDAY SCHOOL TO PULPIT - HARTS HILL BOY'S CAREER Mr. and Mrs. Walter Chrimes, of Hart's Hill, Brierley Hill, have good reason to be proud of their son, the Rev. W.C. Chrimes, who last week at Southport was ordained a minister in the Primitive Methodist Connexion. Many people in the district know Mr. Chrimes, and only three weeks ago he occupied the pulpit at the anniversary services at Pensnett. Of his early life and conversion an interesting outline was given by Mr. Chrimes himself in his ordination address. He told of the spiritual influences which came to bear upon his boyhood's days. Although of a family of Methodists he was for a few years a scholar in a Church of England school. At the age of fourteen he joined the church of his father, being converted in the Primitive Methodist Church at Pensnett. He became a local preacher at the early age of seventeen under the direction of the Rev. J. Ferguson, D.D., and in the Sunday school occupied all offices between scholar and superintendent in turn. When he was 20 years of age the circuit called him to prepare for the ministry, but he declined. Then at last he knew that the call had really come to him, and he entered Manchester College after being coached by the Rev. J. Shepherd (now of Morecambe). He also referred to his parents and sisters in touching terms.... A brilliant future is predicted for the young minister. He has a splendid scholastic record, passing all his examinations with flying colours. During the three years he was at Hartley College, Manchester, he held the premier place on the honours list at three examinations, and while a probationer he maintained his first position for two years by gaining 90 per cent of the marks awarded, for which achievements he was specially commended by the annual Primitive Methodist Conference.... He went to Dalton in June, and now the Liverpool District Synod has approved the unanimous invitation of the Dalton and Millom circuit to his appointment as superintendent minister for the year 1915-16. Previous to his residence at Dalton he was stationed at Ventnor, where he succeeded in building up a strong Primitive Methodist church, and at Cardiff, where as a result of his organising skill a Primitive Methodist Council was formed which has done splendid work among the churches in that city. The may local friends of Mr. and Mrs. Chrimes will rejoice with them in their son's successful career, and he will have the best wishes of all for his future prosperity and happiness."
From The Dudley Chronicle of 25 July 1915: "INTERESTING WEDDING AT DUDLEY. CHRIMES-ROUND A pretty and interesting wedding took place on Saturday afternoon at the Primitive Methodist Church, Wellington Road, Dudley, when Miss Alice Annie Round, daughter of Mr. David Round, Glenroy, Scott's Green, was married to the Rev. Walter Clarence Chrimes, Primitive Methodist minister, of Dalton-in-Furness, North Lancashire, The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. R. Hall (circuit minister), and was fully choral.... After the ceremony a reception was held at "Glenroy", the home of the bride's parents.... The happy pair afterwards left for St. Annes-on-Sea, where the honeymoon will be spent... "
Walter Clarence served in WWI in the Young Mens Christian Association.
Service Number: Unknown
In 1921 Walter Clarence was employed by Primitive Methodist Church at Foxhill Grove and Melbourne Street Primitive Methodist Churches.
The 1926 residence record is intriguing, Walter Clarence being 'posted' to Cheshire. I wonder if he knew that there were other CHRIMESs in that area?
From The Birmingham Daily Post of 24 December 1959: "OBITUARY - Rev. W.C. Chrimes. The funeral of the Rev. Walter Clarence Chrimes, who died recently at his home in Lane Green Road, Billbrook, Wolverhampton, was held at Trinity Methodist Church, Wolverhampton, yesterday. He was minister of Grangers Lane Methodist Church, Cradley Heath for 15 years. The service was conducted by the Rev. R.E. McLean, superintendent of Trinity Methodist circuit, Wolverhampton. Family mourners were Mr. and Mrs. N. Chrimes, Mr. and Mrs. D. Chrimes, Mr. and Mrs. B. Chrimes, Mr. and Mrs. H Woodhouse, Miss L. Chrimes, Miss W. Chrimes, Miss E. Chrimes.... Other mourners included Methodist and Toc H representatives."
Walter Clarence's Grant of Probate reads: "CHRIMES Walter Clarence of Stoneleigh Lane Green Road Bilbrook Codsall Staffordshire died 19 December 1959 Probate Birmingham 16 March to Harold Woodhouse company director. Effects £4289 15s. 4d."
A Notice in The London Gazette of 17 June 1960 seeks claimants to Walter Clarence's estate.
