I cannot find a birth record for Charlotte, either CRIMES or CHRIMES, 1850 - 1860.
The 1901 UK Census includes "niece" Susan CHRIMES aged 19. This was in fact Susannah CHRIMES b.1882, the daughter of Thomas CHRIMES and Catherine HELLEND who had emigrated to the United States in about 1885.
The 1911 UK Census is particularly interesting because it includes "nieces" Sarah CHRIMES aged 19 and Elsie May CHRIMES aged 1, suggesting that they were the children of a brother of Charlotte.
However, see my notes to Elsie May CHRIMES b.1910 suggesting that Sarah was in fact the mother of Elsie May.
The following has been contributed by Julie Jeffries:
"Charlottes daughter Louisa Elizabeth Taylor 1881-1919 gives her birth as at Golds Green so this ties in. When Louisa died Charlotte went up to Durham to collect her orphaned children Smith and brought them to Featherstone to be looked after by her widowed daughter Mary Ann (Polly) 1883-1932 along with her children of similar ages. Mary Ann was illiterate until she was taught by her husband a miner to read and write before he was shot in the back and saccrum whilst rescuing an officer in 1916 during WW1 and died in a hospital tent of his wounds. The officer's wife was grateful for the sacrifice and sent a hamper to Mary every Christmas. Mary used to make Christmas cakes for the childen and coconut cake for herself as she had a stomach problem and died of cancer after having sections of her bowels removed. She pretended her childen were older than they were so they could go to school at 3. The girls were put into service and the boys down the pit. Charlotte had a village shop in Featherstone. She sold everything including shoes. Mary sent the children to Charlottes shop when they needed new shoes. Their old shoes were put on a high wall for anyone to help themselves. Charlotte devised her own marks for keeping a tally of the customers on tick. When she died no-one could decipher her squiggles and tallys of which customers owed what. It appears that Thomas also died of cancer and as Mary and Thomas had the same mother Charlotte there could be a genetic condition."
I cannot find a death record for Charlotte.
