Sarah Jane's husband Samuel CHRIMES emigrated to USA in July 1905. Sarah Jane and their six surviving children followed in September 1905. A passenger manifest for the "Celtic" sailing from Liverpool to New York in 1913 lists "Jane" and her two sons Charles and Harold, but these three entries are struck through. Jane appears on the 1910 US Federal Census, so the 1913 voyage, if it took place, remains confusing. However, Sarah Jane is clearly listed as returning to New York with her husband Samuel in 1924, and alone (as a US Citizen) in 1928. The 1939 Register (UK) clearly shows that Samuel and "Jane" were resident at Dudley, UK in 1939 which is unexpected. Sarah Jane's obituary reads: "CHRIMES - Saturday Dec 5, 1953, Jane Hunt, of 116 Homestead St., Pgh., beloved wife of Samuel Chrimes; mother of Mrs. Esther Cupples, Mrs. Sarah Johnson of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Florence Wagner, Samuel Jr. of Detroit, Mich., the Reverend Charles J., of Chicago Ill. and Harold Chrimes of Pittsburgh; also three sisters in Dudley, England; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren... Services Wednesday at 3 p.m." |
