From The Crewe Guardian of 30 January 1897: "A MIDNIGHT SCENE IN STAFFORD-STREET William Poole, a young man, residing in Alton-street, was charged with assaulting Elizabeth Crimes, of Stafford-street, on the 9th of January. Mr. Chester appeared for the defendant. The complainant gave evidence to the effect that between eleven and twelve o'clock on the night of the 9th January she heard a disturbance going on in the street, and thinking that her son might be implicated in it she went out, and on going in the street was struck by the defendant in the face, and received two black eyes. Evidence in support of the complainant was given by a man named William Smith, who said the complainant gave the defendant no provocation. The case for the defence, as stated by Mr. Chester, was that on this particular night the defendant and a friend had attended a dinner party at a public-house in the neighbourhood, and after eleven o'clock proceeded in the direction of West-street for the purpose of calling at a friend's house who lived in Dewes-street. On the way someone struck the defendant and knocked him down, but when he got up he and his friend continued their journey in the direction of Dewes-street. They ultimately found they had got in the wrong street, and at that time the complainant's son came upon the scene, struck the defendant, and knocked him in the gutter. Mrs. Crimes then came out of her house, and was about to hit the defendant when he pushed her away. Mr. Chester denied, in behalf of the defendant, that Mrs. Crimes was struck in the manner which she had alleged, and stated that Poole simply pushed her. Several witnesses were called on behalf of the defendant. The Bench impose a fine of 10s. and costs. - Thomas Crimes, husband of the complainant in the last case, and Joseph Crimes, her son, were summoned for assaulting Poole at the same time and place. It was alleged by Mr.Chester, who represented Poole, that in the course of the disturbance which took place Poole was assaulted by the two defendants and badly knocked about. The defendants denied assaulting Poole. the elder defendant stating that at the time his wife was carried into the house after being assaulted by Poole he was in bed, and by the time he got up to see what was the matter Poole had gone. William Smith, who have evidence on behalf of Mrs. Crimes in the last case, stated that Poole and the younger defendant had a fight in the street, but Poole struck the first blow. The Mayor remarked that if Poole had been a wise man he would have gone straight home instead of rambling about at that time of night in the totally opposite direction to which his home lay. As far as that case was concerned the Bench had decided to dismiss it."
