| Joseph was baptised at the age of 14, on the same day as seven of his siblings. CheshireBMD gives the location of the 1896 marriage as "Nantwich, Civil Marriage or Registrar Attended". See notes for mother Elizabeth for newspaper report of charge of assualt in 1897 - case dismissed. From The Manchester Evening News of 3 March 1921: "TOO BAD FOR WOMEN TO TRY When Joseph Crimes (45), a labourer, of Saltney, was indicted at Chester Assizes today, for an offence against his daughter, age 19, there were two women on the jury. In view of the nature of the case, Mr. Justice Lush offered to relieve them of serving, and they both withdrew, male jurors taking their places. The prisoner was found guilty and sentenced to four years penal servitude." Joseph appears on the 'Habitual Criminals Register' for 1924 as follows: Name: Joseph Crimes; Prison: Parkhurst; Born: 1875 Saltney, Chester; Offence: Rape; Sentence: 4 yrs penal servitude; Date of Liberation, intended address and occupation: 22 February 1924, Crewe, Labourer. Joseph's burial record is assigned based on the interment of his son Harold in the same grave, though there is no Deaths Index record to support this assumption. |
