William's baptism was in the name CHRYMES. On that record William's parents are stated as John and Diana. William left UK in 1868 for USA. On the 1900 US Federal Census William gave his birth month as December 1844. There is a William on the UK birth records born December 1844 Warrington but that Willliam appears on the 1871 UK Census and still single. There is another William born 1844 Q2 Liverpool but that William also appears on the 1871 UK census and still single. William's marriage to Ann KENDRICK is however certain because he later named one of his children Amelia Kendrick. Ann appears on the US Census of 1920 as "Widow" so her husband William must have died between 1910 and 1920. The record of William's registration for the Boston lodge of masons gives his date of birth as 23 June 1842 which does not seem correct. There is an important record of William's USA death, found only on FamilySearch.org. It clearly identifies William's parents as John CHRIMES and Diana TURNER. This record provides an indisputable link between William and his UK parents, and overrides the discrepancies between records of William's birth year. I suspect that William's birthday was indeed 27 December 1842, but when he married Ann KENDRICK in UK he reduced his age by two years to make him seem only slightly older than her. He kept up this deceit for the rest of his life. So I suspect (but cannot prove) that he was born on 27 December 1842. A FamilySearch "United States, GenealogyBank Historical Newspaper Obituaries, 1815-2011" record cites an obituary in The Boston Herald dated 14 March 1914, and gives age at death as "71 2 mos 12 d." and address as 25 Ward Street, South Boston. |
