In 1921 John Bates was employed by Warburton and Crimes, Colliery Agency of Liverpool Rd., Kidsgrove. At that date the business would be in the name of his father. From The Staffordshire Sentinel of 2 August 1937: "FLORAL TRIBUTES TO WELL KNOWN ALSAGER RESIDENT The funeral took place at Lawton Church, yesterday, of Mr. John Bates Crimes, of West Mere, Church-road, Alsager, who died suddenly on Friday at his home. Fifty-eight years of age, Mr. Crimes was principal of the firm of Warburton and Crimes, colliery agents of Kidsgrove, the firm having been founded by his father, and the late Mr. F.G. Warburton, many years ago. For a number of years, Mr. Crimes was organist at St. Saviour's Church, Talke, and later acted in a similar capacity at Kidsgrove Parish Church. He was well-known in Masonic circles, and in 1922 succeeded his brother, Mr. F.C. Crimes, as Worshipful Master of St. Thomas' Lodge (1914), Kidsgrove. He was organist at the lodge and also a P.P.G. organist. Mr. Crimes was keenly interested in sport and was a regular supporter of Stoke City F.C. He was a member of Alsager Golf Club. In his younger days he was a member of the Earl of Chester's Yeomanry. The service was conducted by the Rector (the Rev. C.K. England), and the hymn 'Abide with me' was sung. Masonic brethren dropped sprigs of acacia into the grave. The principal mourners were Mr. H. Crimes (son), Miss Cassie Crimes and Miss Peggy Crimes (daughters). Mr. Fred C. Crimes (brother), Mr. N. Dale, Mr. J Colclough, and Mr. G.H. Wright (brothers-in-law) ... " It is notable that the funeral report and obituary do not mention John Bates' wife Martha May. John Bates's Grant of Probate reads: "CRIMES John Bates of Westmere Church Road Alsager Cheshire died 30 July 1937. Probate London 27 October to Martha May Crimes widow. Effects: £7798 15s.2d." |
