Peter was named CRIMES in his early life. From The London Gazette of 19 April 1867: "Peter Crimes, of Halton, in the county of Chester, having been adjudged bankrupt under a Petition for adjudication of bankruptcy, filed in the County Court of Cheshire, holden at Runcorn, on the 12th day of April 1867, is hereby required to surrender himself to William Nicholson, Esq., a Registrar of the the said court, at the first meeting of creditors..." Following the death of his first wife Elizabeth with whom he had five daughters, Peter moved to Hull, Yorkshire where he married Jane Anne (using the name CRIMES) and had a further two children.
