From the Find-a-Grave record: "MILITARY SERVICE Enlisted in Company I, Georgia 52nd Infantry Regiment, CSA on 4 March 1862 at Dawson, Georgia. Captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 4 July 1863 and released later that month. Captured at Marietta, Georgia on 5 July 1864. Held in captivity at Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois until 16 June 1865. OTHER William Martin Crymes was the Census Taker for Waynesville in 1880 and 1890. His party affiliation as of 1880 was Republican. OBITUARY (Transcribed from a newspaper clipping, most likely from the Waynesville Courier, itself transcribed in We Begin With Mathew: The Second Battle Book.) "Aged Citizen Passes Away" On last Friday morning Mr. W.M. Crymes died at his home just out from town. He had been ill for only a short time the trouble being pneumonia, brought on by the grippe. The funeral was conducted from the Baptist Church by Pastor Lightfoot Sunday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in Green Hill Cemetery. A large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral services which were very impressive and appropriate. Mr. Crymes came here about forty years ago from South Carolina and has since been living on his farm near town. He was an admirable man, being greatly beloved by all who knew him. He was a good citizen and has been a deacon in the Baptist Church. He took a great interest in all church work and had the confidence of all his brethren. The deceased was 76 years of age and leaves a wife and five grown children, among them our efficient postmaster, J.E. Crymes." |
