Alternative date of birth (1939 Register): 30 September 1877. Alternative place of birth (1921 England Census): Warrington. From The Runcorn Weekly News of 28 April 1916: "MORE 'LONG PULLS' - There was another case of 'long pull' at Widnes Sessions yesterday. The defendant, Charles Chrimes, Arch Hotel, Dock road, was summoned with having on April 3rd sold beer otherwise than by measure. Mr. J.W. Knowles appeared for the defendant and entered a plea of guilty. Supt. Foster said that P.C. Perry visited the Arch Hotel and asked for a pint of beer. Mrs. Chrimes drew the beer from a tap into the bottle which the constable gave to her. She did not measure it. Inspector Kay took possession of the beer immediately afterwards and found it was two fluid ounces over the pint. Mrs. Chrimes said she was very busy and had given a little over to make up for spilling. The Chairman (Mr. John Morrison) said that as the offence had taken place before the other cases were heard in that court they would fine the defendant the same as the others - £1." Sounds like a deliberate 'sting' to me. Had the police got nothing better to do in 1916? Oh, yes, and by the way there was a war on! Isabella's Grant of Probate reads: "CHRIMES, Isabella of 133 Ringway Thornton Cleveleys Lancs died 12 September 1975 Probate Liverpool 5 December £11064" |
