Place of birth is taken from a GenesReunited tree by "Bronwen Hebblethwaite". Charles Holland had three sons who all died before him. The 1921 England Census gives Charles Holland's occupation was publican but does not name the pub. The address of 1 Lower Church Street is suggestive of a building still standing (no longer a pub) at the junction of Lower Church Street and Upper Mersey Road which bears the name 'Swan Inn'. The 1921 England Census return appears to have been completed by the enumerator, though Charles Holland has signed it. From The Runcorn Weekly News of 15 February 1929: "DRINK AFTER HOURS A Widnes Prosecution MAGISTRATES' LENIENT VIEW Charles Chrimes, licensee of the Arch Hotel, Dock Road, was summoned at Widnes Police Court on Monday for supplying intoxicating liquor during non-permitted hours ... The chairman, in announcing the decision of the bench, said: 'We will dismiss these cases on payment of costs'...." From The Liverpool Echo of 20 May 1942: "DEATHS - CHRIMES May 18, at 12 Hale Road, Widnes (Late of Arch Hotel), CHARLES, beloved husband of Isabella Chrimes. Cortege leaves house tomorrow (Thursday), at 3.15 p.m., for interment at Widnes Borough Cemetery at 4 p.m." Charles's Grant of Probate record reads: "CHRIMES Charles of 12 Hale Road Ditton Widnes Lancashire died 18 May 1942 Probate Liverpool 27 October to Isabella Chrimes widow and Katherine Chrimes and Isabel Chrimes spinsters. Effects £2044 8s. 10d." |
