Thomas's 1875 Marriages Index record is in the name GRIMES. The 1881 UK Census gives the family name as GRIMES, which in consultation with M J HUTCHINSON was found to be a deliberate change of name, which was changed back to CHRIMES later. Thomas (and Catherine) moved to the USA in 1885, where he died in 1926. The 1916 Marriage Record declares that Thomas was divorced [from Catherine HELLEND] on 9 September 1911. From The Rome Sentinel of June 28, 1926 "Thomas Chrimes, 70, died at his home, 600 Elm street, Saturday afternoon, after a heart attack. Dr. H. J. Teller, the coroner, was summoned. Mr. Chrimes had been ill with heart disease for some time and had a premonition of his death, which he expressed to his son. He was born in England, coming to Rome 45 years ago. He was well known in this city and for 40 years worked in the Merchant Iron Mill, later the Rome Iron Mills, Inc., where he was a night watchman. He was twice married, his second wife being the late Mary Claffey Chrimes. He was a member of Zion Episcopal Church and the Modern Woodmen of America. Mr. Chrimes survivors are three sons, Thomas and William of Yorkshire, England, and John, Clayville, and one sister in England. Also one niece, Mrs. Annie Lesnan, Boston." Thomas's US Passport Application gives his date of birth as 14 February 1857 but this may be a confusion with his father's death! |
