I could not find a birth record for Frederick George, either as CHRIMES or CRIMES. However, I now believe that Frederick George was named just Frederick at birth, and changed to Frederick George at marriage. In the 1901 census, Charles, single, aged 37 is living with his brother Frederick, aged 28 single at 24 Viaduct Street, Widnes. From The Widnes Examiner of 14 November 1902: "OARSMEN DANCING Last Friday the annual dance promoted by the Runcorn Boating Club took place in the Guild Hall... The dancing commenced at eight o'clock and was kept up with zest until four o'clock the next morning. Limelight was used for the shadow dancing. There was an attendance of 86. Messrs R P. Johnson and F.G. Chrimes officiated as M C's and the music was provided by Mr. Tonks' string band..." From The Manchester Evening News of 20 April 1904: "SCENE IN A RUNCORN HOTEL Last night Fred Chrimes, Viaduct-street, Widnes, a young man of no occupation, attempted to commit suicide at the London Hotel, Runcorn. Chrimes is a friend of Mr. J. Hall, licensee of the hotel, and he cut his throat in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Hall in the sitting-room with an ordinary pen-knife. Dr. McDougall had to put 17 stitches in the fearful gash made. The reason for the rash act has not transpired." Later in 1904 Frederick appeared in court charged with attempting to commit suicide. "The magistrate bound the prisoner over for six months, on his own and his brother's recognisance". In the 1911 census, Frederick George was living with his wife Mary Ida and their children George, Fred and Harold in Bolton. In 1921 Frederick George was employed by Turner Bros. Asbestos Co. Ltd. of Spotland, Rochdale. Frederick George's death is recorded with the name just Frederick CHRIMES. On the marriage certificate of his son George (to Doreen Kershaw nee BOOTH) Frederick George is named as just Frederick CHRIMES. From The Rochdale Observer of 3 January 1940: "CHRIMES - On the 31st. ult., at 24 Shawfield Lane, Norden, Frederick, the beloved husband of Mary Ida, aged 67 years. - Interment St. Paul's Church, Norden, to-morrow (Thurs), Jan. 4th. at 2 30pm." |
